Where are you from? How did you first get interested in theatre?

I am from Nova Scotia. Theatre has interested me from a young age. None of my family ever participated in going to theatre unless any of their children was a part of it. Even now, the only time my family ever goes to see any form of theatre is because I have worked on it. My family was at first skeptical of me going into theatre but now greatly encourage me as they can see how much I love it.

Where are you studying now?

I’m a student at Dalhousie University.

What came first for you, theatre or music?

Theatre has always been my number one love. I’ve never been a very musical person, but I love to see and hear musicals/operas. Being able to work as a stage manager for the Festival has been a great deal of fun!

How should interpretive artists deal with works that are racist and/or sexist? What can be done to make opera relevant to the next generation?:

An interesting way to deal with this would be to reverse the roles. If a show is very sexist against women, swap all the genders to show sexism against men. It would pose an incredible challenge but would be a very interesting way to show that sexism can exist both ways.

What are you most looking forward to about this summer?

I always look forward to meeting the participants that come to this festival. People come from all over the place to perform in little ol’ Halifax. It’s amazing to meet people of so many different backgrounds.

Thanks, Amber!
