Giulio Cesare in Egitto by G.F. Handel

With Baroque orchestra. Handel’s most popular opera—both in his own lifetime and today—depicts the meeting of Julius Caesar, fresh from his triumphs over Pompey the Great with the embattled Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. Handel’s Giulio Cesare is one of the most well-known works in the Baroque operatic canon, with good reason: a tumultuous plot line interweaves a surprisingly intimate story of love, lust, political ambition, and revenge with some of the most exquisite melodies in all of western music.
