The Halifax Summer Opera Festival is holding auditions for singing and speaking roles for adults and children in their production of Kurt Weill’s Street Scene this summer.

Street Scene is Weill’s great “American opera”, straddling the categories of opera and musical theatre. It won the first Tony Award for best Original Score in 1947 and is based on Elmer Rice’s Pulitzer-Prize winning play of the same name. It tells the interconnected stories of families living in a tenement in New York City in the early 20th century.

HSOF is entering its 11th year as one of Canada’s most successful summer performance workshops. Over 60 international performers will attend HSOF this year, working on one of three main shows. We have a great time putting the shows together and we work to foster a supportive, friendly atmosphere. We love getting community members, both performing professionals and amateurs, involved in these shows.

Performers of all ages, genders, and ethnicities are welcome. Both established and emerging artists are encouraged to apply. All successful auditioners will receive full scholarships to the workshop, but will not otherwise be paid.

SINGERS may be from a variety of backgrounds and musical styles, though strong musicianship and stage presence are assets. All singers will receive some coaching as part of the workshop, although you are responsible for learning your roles on your own.

Auditions will be held on Monday, June 22nd, 2015 in Halifax, by appointment only. Please submit a headshot and resume (or brief bio outlining training and experience) by email to info@halifaxsummeroperafestival.com

Only applicants who are selected for an audition will be contacted.
Submissions must be received no later than 5:00pm on Sunday, June 21th, 2015.

Successful SINGER applicants will be asked to prepare a song from any of the following genres: musical theatre, contemporary/pop, folk, gospel, and classical. Choose a song that show you at your best. An accompanist will be provided.

Performers who have auditioned for (or worked with) Nina Scott-Stoddart or Chris Pelrine before don’t need to audition again, but may express their interest in being considered by e-mailing an updated resume and headshot.
