L'Egisto (1643)

by Francesco Cavalli

A delightful rarity: our first 17th century opera, and our first Cavalli!  Gods and lovers clash in a world of artifice.
In Italian, accompanied by harpsichord continuo and violins.

Beautiful early Baroque music combined with a fanciful storyline of gods and lovers. Our modern-dress production will be full of Instagram moments as the characters struggle to find their true loves and live a more authentic life.

Synopsis of L'Egisto

L’Egisto tells the story of two pairs of lovers whose lives have been tampered with by the gods. While Climene and Egisto are separated for a year from their loved ones, Lidio and Clori, the two of them are captured by Venus’ and Amor’s influence. When Egisto and Climene return to the island of Zacynthos looking for their loved once, they find the two united as lovers. Climene’s brother Ipparco, who is obsessively in love with Clori, encourages her wish for revenge. His obsession is held in check by Dema, his friend and loyal mentor. All the while, these affairs are closely observed by Venus and Amor, who try to prevent the former lovers reunion out of spite for anyone in Apollo’s favour, especially Egisto, his grandson.
