The Halifax Summer Opera Festival Association works in two principal areas:
We are an educational charity, operated to instruct people of all ages (but particularly young adults) in the area of performing arts, specifically opera and musical theatre. Our goal is to make this kind of education more accessible for more people, and the principal way we do this is by providing as many scholarships to our participants as we can. You can help us with this work by donating to our Scholarship fund or presenting a special scholarship under your own name or the name of someone you wish to commemorate. For the latter, you may wish to specify a geographical area or age group: i.e. a soprano under 25 from Nova Scotia, or New Brunswick.
We are also a producer of high quality opera and musical theatre performances in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We contribute to the diversity of this great city and our productions tend to be more young in feel, more edgy than many more traditional approaches. You can help us maintain opera in Halifax with your gift.
Administration at HSOFA takes up a very small percentage of our operating budget. Your donation will go directly to the productions themselves (to the people we hired, to the theatres we book) or directly to the benefit of the young people who study here.
Every year HSOF gives thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving and talented young singers while producing over a dozen concerts in Halifax. You can support HSOF’s work by donating to our Scholarship or General Funds. All donations of $10 or more will receive a tax receipt, and you can make your donation using a credit card by clicking on the link below. If you would like to send us a cheque, please make it payable to Halifax Summer Opera Festival and mail it to PO Box 1819, Lunenburg, NS, B0J 2C0 along with your name and address and we will send your receipt right away.
For fifteen seasons the Halifax Summer Opera Festival and Workshop has brought opera education and performances to the HRM. We’ve supported young singers by offering them a way to study the many skills needed by an opera performer by rehearsing and performing an entire role in the context of a show.
In the course of this, the workshop has grown from four performances of one opera in 2005 to twelve performances of three complete shows, plus extra shows in 2019! This means more performances of opera and musical theatre for Halifax audiences and tourists in the summer and more opportunities for young singers to perform.
We’re all about accessibility — keeping opera lean and young and exciting, with performances that engage and entertain.
Would you like to support our work? Our roots are in our community and it can be so rewarding to support the young people who study and perform with us. We’re looking for volunteers, Board members, donors and, most of all, members.
