Join our talented young performers for 15 performances over four weeks, plus masterclasses and other special events open to the public. From Baroque genius to Mozart’s kookiest opera, from Broadway musical to operas by women composers, HSOF has something for everyone!


MAINSTAGE OPERAS

THE MAGIC FLUTE  – by W.A. Mozart -Sung in German, dialogue in English. Projected English translations. Fully staged and costumed and accompanied by piano and flute. August 2, 3, 8  and 10 at the Sir James Dunn Theatre, Dalhousie Arts Centre

TALES OF HOFFMANN – by Jacques Offenbach Sung in French with projected English translations. Fully-staged and costumed and accompanied by piano.  August 3, 4, 7 and 10 at the Sir James Dunn Theatre, Dalhousie Arts Centre

ALCINA – by G.F. Handel – Sung in Italian with projected English translations, fully-staged and costumed and accompanied by keyboard, cello and violin.  August 4, 6, 9 and 11 at the Lillian Piercey Concert Hall, Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts.

LIBRARY LECTURE SERIES

Join us for a three part, free noon hour lecture recital series at the Paul O’Regan Hall at the Halifax Central Library on July 28, 29 and 30. All lectures run from noon to 12:45 pm. FREE admission.

Wednesday July 17 – Handel’s Alcina and Italian opera of the mid-Baroque era

Alcina was one of Handel’s last hits in London. We look at one of our main stage operas, with musical examples by singers from the Halifax Summer Opera Festival. Lecturer Nina Scott-Stoddart, Artistic Director

Thursday July 18 – W.A. Mozart’s The Magic Flute and German singspiel

Mozart’s 1791 work Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) was a singspiel; part singing, part dialogue. A lecture recital with musical examples by singers from the Halifax Summer Opera Festival. Lecturer Edie Reaney-Chunn, assistant director for The Magic Flute.


Friday July 19 – 
Jacques Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann and French romantic opera

One of the most idiosyncratic French opera, Offenbach’s Les contes d’Hoffmann is a wild and wonderful work! A lecture recital with musical examples by singers from the Halifax Summer Opera Festival. Lecturer Nicholas Gilmore,  conductor for Hoffmann.

MASTERCLASSES

Watch four experienced performers work with six young singers over the course of two hours. All our masterclasses are open to the public. Tickets are $10 each for auditors. All masterclasses take place in Room 121 in the basement of the Dalhousie Arts Centre.
