Máiri Demings: 2019 Performer Highlight

Born in Springhill Nova Scotia, Demings is a mezzo-soprano who knew that opera was for her all the way back in junior high. This year, she makes her debut with HSOF as Nicklausse in The Tales of Hoffmann. Find out more about The Tales of Hoffmann here:

This year, HSOF welcomes over 50 performers from around the world, including many from Nova Scotia and the Maritimes, all of whom underwent competitive auditions. We are excited to introduce Máiri Demings as a performer this summer!

Q:  When did you start studying voice? Where are you studying now?

A:  “I started taking lessons when I was in the second grade. I pursued my Bachelor of music at Acadia University with Dr. Christianne Rushton. I recently completed my Masters of Music in Vocal Literature and Performance at The University of Western Ontario under the wonderful guidance of Torin Chiles.

A:  Exchanging ideas about the character, music and the plot with my fellow singers. Someone may have a different backstory for a character or pick up on a musical cue I missed. It takes this exchange to get a full picture of the show..”

A:  “Right now I love Isabel Leonard. It just blows my mind that the same woman can be a sensual Carmen in one moment and an annoying, lusty Cherubino in the next.”

A:  “I think Josh Ramsay from Marianas Trench has the best voice in the pop world right now. (My 14-year-old emo kid self is very happy I’m admitting this.)”
