Tenors and Baritones needed for the Yorkshire Opera Workshop

The Yorkshire Opera Workshop is still in need of tenors, baritones, and basses for their 2014 season.

For their 2nd season, the Yorkshire Opera Workshop (Halifax Summer Opera Festival’s sister program in the UK) is producing Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe.

Iolanthe is one of Gilbert & Sullivan’s best operettas. Full of political humour and satire, this is show which challenges singers, offers some of the most amazing G&S music, and is incredibly fun to perform. The story concerns a band of immortal fairies who find themselves at odds with the House of Peers. Wit and hilarity ensue.

Roles to be filled:
Chancellor: One role available. Comic Bass-baritone or Baritone.
George, Earl of Mountararat: Two roles available.  Tenor.
Thomas, Earl Tolloller: Two roles available.  Baritone.
Private Willis: One role available.  Bass.
Strephon: Two roles available.  Baritone.

** Workshop rates are regularly $1500 for the workshop, and $625 for accommodations, but substantial scholarships are available for these roles. **

Application is free, and can be done online (mail applications are also accepted). Please visit the YOW website or email for more information.

What is the Yorkshire Opera Workshop?

D3_SALTBURN

YOW is a summer opera program in Saltburn-by-the-Sea in North Yorkshire, England that runs for three weeks, giving singers from university undergrads to professionals opportunities to learn roles in the context of performing an entire, fully-staged opera.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a lovely Victorian resort town on the north east coast of England. We rehearse at The Saltburn School and perform at the Saltburn Community Theatre, both part of Saltburn Arts. Saltburn is a perfect gem of a town, surrounded by the stunning scenery of the North Yorkshire coast and only a few minutes away from the North York Moors.

Operas are double-cast as much as possible, with each participant receiving at least two public performances. Masterclasses in dramatic and musical interpretation and auditioning and private coaching are also a part of the process.

The Yorkshire Opera Workshop is a sister program of the Halifax Summer Opera Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and is run by Nina Scott-Stoddart, David Mosey, and Marja Ernst.

The 2014 fee is $1500 ($1000 for chorus roles), with scholarships available. Participants should budget $625 for housing, if they wish to stay at YOW’s Alpha Apartment (14 places are available in double rooms, in a self-catering flat, just minutes away from the performance and rehearsal venues).
