Serena Yeung: 2019 Performer Highlight

Yeung is a soprano who began her musical journey in Hong Kong where she participated in various dramas and music productions. This year, she makes her debut with HSOF as the Second Lady in The Magic Flute. Find out more about The Magic Flute here:

This year, HSOF welcomes over 50 performers from around the world, including many from Nova Scotia and the Maritimes, all of whom underwent competitive auditions. We are excited to introduce Lissy Meyerowitz as a performer this summer!

Q: When did you start studying voice? Where are you studying now?

A: “I started singing in the Hong Kong Children’s Choir when I was 10 and began voice lessons when I was 13. I’m going into my final year at the University of Calgary in September.

As a singer at an early stage, I’m not sure which kind of repertoires suits and interests me the most, there’s still a lot out there I would love to learn and explore.“

Q: What has been your onstage experience or role that has been the most meaningful, exciting or successful for you? What do you long to do next?

A: “Messiah Debut Singer – My first professional gig and my first time singing with Baroque orchestra. I wish one day I could perform an oratorio on my own…. some Haydn or Bach would also be nice. 🙂“

Q: Who is your biggest inspiration in the opera world?

A: “Alex Tam, Laura Hynes – my teachers in HK and Calgary.”

Q: Who is your biggest inspiration in the non-opera world?

A: “Alex Tam, a teacher and mentor of mine who has been watching me grow as both me as a singer and the non-musician side of me for so many years. “I’m very anxious from time to time, but I chose to put it down, and go with the flow, because I know I simply can’t change everything. Take it as it is.” He completely changes the way I face challenges and view life as an artist.”
