Quintet from HSOW’s Carmen 2012: Mercedes (Lauren Jacob), Carmen (Jessica Lane), Frasquita (Alyssa McCarthy), Doncairo (Jonathan Bédard), Remendado (Scott Rumble)

Over the next few days the singers and creative teams for the 9th annual Halifax Summer Opera Workshop and Festival will be converging on the East Coast city of Halifax in preparation for over 15 performances over the next four weeks.

In addition to our three main shows, The Marriage of Figaro (with orchestra), Les dialogues des carmelites and Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, we’re presenting an opera cocktail party fundraiser on July 27, an opera pops concert, A Night at the Opera, on August 3, and a concert saluting Mario Lanza on August 7.

We’re thrilled to welcome back so many great young artists from past seasons,: in the photo from last year’s Carmen, for example, you can see Lauren Jacob and Jonathan Bédard (who are singing Cherubino and  Count Almaviva, respectively, in The Marriage of Figaro) and Scott Rumble who will sing Henrik in A Little Night Music!

We’re so excited to begin!  For information about tickets to any of our shows, please visit our Upcoming Performances page!

Opera Cocktail Party on July 27!

HSOW cocktail invite
What could be more fun than an operatic cocktail party?
This year the 9th annual Halifax Summer Opera Workshop presents three full-length works:  Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, Poulenc’s Les dialogues des carmelites and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.  Because we’ve set Figaro in the 1960s (and because it’s our centrepiece production, with a full orchestra for the first time in our history), we’ve decided to throw a fabulous cocktail party to celebrate!
Join us for an evening of elegant 1960s-themed drinks and nibbles and a chance to meet, hear and support some of the rising young stars of the Workshop! This intimate and exclusive fundraising party will be held on Saturday July 27, from 7:30 to 10:00 pm at the home of our Board President Andrew Pickett (near Inglis and South Park) in Halifax.
A silent auction will be held during the event as well — be sure to be on the lookout for more information regarding the exciting items we’ll be offering, which will include art, jewellery and travel packages.
All money raised goes to support our tremendously talented scholarship students, many of whom will be singing at the party.
We encourage you to dress up (either in 1960s style or fancy cocktail clothes), mingle with the artists and enjoy an evening of music and fun!  The most fabulous outfit will win a prize!
How can I get tickets?
Tickets bought or reserved in advance are $25 each. Unreserved tickets at the door will be $35 each.
Space is limited so we encourage you to reserve tickets in advance for only $25 each by phoning 902–640-2497 or by emailing Marja Ernst. Or you can fill in our online reservation form.
If you’d like to pay in advance via PayPal, you can do that, too!
If you’d like to donate something for the silent auction or support the program in another way, please do contact Marja Ernst to help out.  If you know someone who might enjoy this evening, please do forward this message to them!
Thanks again for supporting opera education for young artists. We look forward to seeing you on the 27th!
