Final weekend for Halifax Summer Opera Festival starts tomorrow night with Orpheus in the Underworld

This weekend is the last chance to see the main stage shows of the 2014 Halifax Summer Opera Festival, starting with Orpheus in the Underworld on Friday night, at 7:30 pm at the Sir James Dunn Theatre!

The perfect frothy, saucy summer show, this sparkling operetta packs tons of great tunes into its 1 hour 40 minute running time. Our cast of lively young singers bring to life the satirical story of Orpheus, his wife Euridice and all the gods of Olympus and Hades in a new translation by David Mosey.

Tickets are $25/$20/$10 and are available at the door or online at Brown Paper Tickets

The other shows this weekend are:

Giulio Cesare: Saturday August 16, 2 pm at the Bella Rose Arts Centre
Rusalka: Saturday August 16, 7:30 pm at the Sir James Dunn Theatre
Orpheus in the Underworld: Sunday August 17, 2 pm at the Sir James Dunn Theatre

Two more chances to see Dvorak’s fairy tale opera Rusalka in Halifax: tonight and Saturday night!

Don’t miss the Halifax Summer Opera Festival’s production of Rusalka, the tale of a water nymph who longs for the love of a mortal prince. Recognize the story? It’s the Little Mermaid, but in Czech (don’t worry, there are projected translations) and accompanied by the most glorious music!

An incredible score, graceful dancing and truly great singing are the highlights of this elegant, pretty production. If you like lush, romantic music, this is the piece for you! It’s also family-friendly and sure-fire hit for the young divas or divos in your life.

Presented at the Dunn Theatre at the Dalhousie Arts Centre, Wednesday August 13 and Friday August 16 at 7:30 pm.

Tickets are $25/$20/$10 and are available at the door or online at Brown Paper Tickets.

Our second week of performances starts with Handel’s Giulio Cesare on Tuesday night!

Handel’s beautiful opera Giulio Cesare continues its run at the Bella Rose Arts Centre on Tuesday night, with a performance starting at 7:30 pm. This modern-dress production directed and designed by Allison Grant is also the first full length Baroque opera presented with professional Baroque orchestra on period instruments. This is a stunning show, both musically and visually! Tickets are $30/$25/$10 and are available at the door or online at Brown Paper Tickets.

Main stage operas open in Halifax Friday night with Rusalka

Our most family friendly show this season is the fairy tale opera Rusalka. Based on the story that inspired The Little Mermaid, it’s beautiful and moving.  Don’t worry about the fact that it’s in Czech — we use projected English translations for all our foreign language shows so you won’t miss any of the story!

Rusalka opens Friday August 8 at 7:30 pm at the Dunn Theatre at the Dalhousie Arts Centre.  Tickets available online  at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/734411 or at the door!

Coming up later this weekend is the comic operetta Orpheus in the Underworld (Saturday August 9, 2 pm and Sunday August 10, 7:30 pm) and our featured Baroque opera with orchestra, Giulio Cesare (Sunday August 10, 2 pm). For more information see our website!
