A Countertenor at the Opera — Rescheduled for Friday February 5, Music Room

This concert has been rescheduled  again for February 26 — programming in winter, gotta love it!

Countertenor Andrew Pickett is well known to Nova Scotia audiences for his rare and specialized voice. This month, music lovers will have an opportunity to hear him perform beautiful ultra-high male arias in “A Countertenor at the Opera” at the Music Room on Friday, February 5, in a benefit concert for the Halifax Summer Opera Festival.

Accompanied by collaborative pianist Lynette Wahlstrom, Pickett will take the audience on a journey through four centuries of opera, from the early days of the castrati superstars to contemporary works written for countertenor. The programme will feature works by composers such as Purcell, Handel, Monteverdi, Mozart, Gluck, Benjamin Britten, Jonathan Dove, and Canadian composer Elizabeth Raum.

The recital will take place Friday, February 29, 7:30 pm at The Music Room, 6181 Lady Hammond Road, Halifax. Tickets are $30 and are available online through Ticket Halifax or at the door. Seating is very limited! All proceeds go toward scholarships to allow young performers to attend the Halifax Summer Opera Festival.

Season Launch Cocktail Party for Halifax Summer Opera Festival’s 11th Season!

What could be more fun than an operatic cocktail party?

This year the 11th annual Halifax Summer Opera Festival presents three full-length works with suffering heroines:  Kurt Weill’s Street Scene, Massenet’s Cendrillon and Floyd’s Susannah. Since even opera divas shouldn’t suffer all the time, we’ve decided to throw a fabulous cocktail party to launch the season!

Join us for an evening of  drinks and nibbles and a chance to meet, hear and support some of the rising young stars of the Festival! This intimate and exclusive fundraising party will be held on Saturday July 18, from 7:30 to 10:00 pm at the home of our Board Chair in Halifax.

All money raised goes to support our tremendously talented scholarship students, many of whom will be singing at the party.

We encourage you to dress up, mingle with the artists and enjoy an evening of music and fun!

How can I get tickets?

Tickets bought or reserved in advance are $25 each (or $10 for Student and Artists). Unreserved tickets at the door will be $35 each.

Space is strictly limited so we encourage you to buy tickets in advance for only $25 online, or reserve them by emailing Festival Manager Fleurette Benoit at boxoffice@halifaxsummeroperafestival.com

Thanks again for supporting opera education for young artists. We look forward to seeing you on the 18th!

Join us for a gala evening of entertainment, a silent auction and great nibbles as we raise money for the rehearsal space for this year’s Halifax Summer Opera Festival Association!

“Spring into Opera” will be held at a lovely private home in Halifax. Tickets are $35.00 per person, which will include your membership in the Association.  Picture yourself sipping wine and nibbling on delectable morsels, all the while surrounded by glorious operatic music featuring young, fresh voices accompanied by Lynette Wahlstrom on the baby grand.  A silent auction will complete the evening which starts at 7:00 pm.

As a music lover you are probably aware of the Halifax Summer Opera Festival which is moving from success to success.  We are gearing up for our 10th summer season, which will feature Giulio Cesare with Baroque orchestra as well as productions of Rusalka and Sondheim’s Into the Woods. However, there has been a small complication. The Dalhousie Arts Centre, our rehearsal home for the last nine years, is undergoing renovations this summer and most rehearsal places there will not be available. Our alternate rehearsal venue, while lovely, is much more expensive than the DAC, and we really appreciate your support as we raise money to cover these new costs.

Regular tickets to this event are $35, but if you’d like to help more, and wish to be listed in our programme as a supporter, we invite you to send us $100 which will also include your membership in the Association.
